Chinese buffalo bone okimono - The village chief
Chinese okimono in bone:
- This statue is carved from buffalo bone.
- It dates from the mid / late twentieth century.
- Unlike the netsuke, the okimono has no utility function. It is designed as a simple, purely decorative statue.
- The first okimono appear in the Edo era in Japan (1603-1868).
- Our okimono statues represent characters in activities (doing odd jobs), as well as geishas.
- This okimono is entirely engraved and hand-cut.
